Biomimicry and Nature-Based Systems

Tigrilla Gardenia, Biomimicry and Nature-Inspired Systems

Biomimicry is a nature-based approach to innovation that seeks sustainable solutions to human challenges by emulating nature’s time-tested patterns and strategies.

Humans are clever, but without intending to, we have created massive sustainability problems for future generations. Fortunately, solutions to these global challenges exist all around us. And biomimicry can help us find them!

Biomimicry Design and Development

Nature-based processes model the design and production of materials, structures, and systems on biological entities and processes. This allows us to create products, processes, and policies—new ways of living—well-adapted to Life on Earth over the long haul. By using nature’s genius, biomimics look to organisms in nature that carry out the functions needed, and then emulate their time-tested experiences.

The core idea is that nature has already solved many of the problems we are grappling with. Animals, plants, microbes, etc. are the consummate engineers of our world, while also the most efficient builders on the planet. After billions of years of research and development, failures are fossils. In contrast, what surrounds us is the secret to survival. Therefore, by imitating their core functions, we can be resource efficient, fit form to function, and co-create a beautiful, sustainable world.
