Brains Are Not Required When It Comes to Thinking and Solving Problems

Over and over again, we have been told by human neurobiologists that a brain is central to all things intelligence, cognition, and especially, consciousness. But now it seems that a new branch of science is emerging that shows that brains might not be the end-all-be-all for thinking and problem solving. Hallelujah!

Scientists have discovered that simple cells, like those in a flatworm’s tail, can learn, remember and act on information. It seems that they do this by using bioelectricity in their cells. In other words, memory is not just a product of the brain!

This amazing finding opens up a new field of research called basal cognition. It shows that intelligence is not just a property of brains, but of life itself! Isn’t that what plant neurobiologists have been saying all along.

Follow along to learn more about this fascinating area of study and what it means for plant cognition.

Topics Covered about brainless thinking:

  • A brain may not be necessary for memory and problem solving
  • Bioelectricity may be at the center of thinking, not neurons
  • Implications of basal cognition for plants
