Why Look At Plants? Overcoming Plant Blindness

“Plants are amazing organisms.” And yet, we know that most humans don’t see kin for who they truly are. But what do we do? What are the steps to overcoming plant blindness?

We go through two very different approaches in this episode of Plant Consciousness Commentary.

Maybe education is the best path forward? More plant scientists out there means more people studying and working with plants. Then again, that also means more people dissecting and breaking plants down into tiny pieces. Hmmm… is that what plants need?

What about focusing on the arts? By taking plants out of the realm of object, and into subject, we can start to “see” kin in the built environment. Could that be the way?

Follow along as I break down both of these proposed paths to see what they mean for the plants themselves.

Topics Covered about overcoming plant blindness:

  • Plants should play a more central role in biological education.
  • Education could lead to more harm to plants, unless we also emphasize agency.
  • Paying attention to plants gives us the possibility of considering new modes of attention and awakening new modalities of perception.
