Ingrid Vranken’s paper “Rooted Hauntology Lab: Attempts at Vegetal Curation” explores the intersection of curatorial artistic practice and plant life, aiming to establish a form of collaboration with plants that transcends traditional human-centric approaches. Vranken reflects on her personal journey of working alongside plants in the creation of the lab, treating them as ‘ghosts’—entities with presence and history that influence the living.
This approach is a conscious effort to resist extractivism, the exploitative economic model that views nature solely as a resource to be extracted. By doing so, Vranken seeks to redefine the ethics and dynamics of relationality in curation, emphasizing a symbiotic co-existence with the vegetal world.
The paper delves strategies of ‘being-with’, generosity, and sympoiesis—a collaborative, continuously forming process. The Rooted Hauntology Lab serves as both the outcome and the experimental ground for these ideas, where plants are not just objects of display but active participants in the curatorial narrative. Vranken’s work is an interesting step to reevaluate our interactions with otherkin, urging a shift towards practices that honor the agency of plants and challenge the anthropocentric norms of contemporary art curation.
