This week’s commentary explores two insightful papers to get to the heart of the plantness within.
Natasha Myers’ interview in “Stories are Seeds” delves into the idea that we need new storytelling about plants in order to reshape our understanding of kin, emphasizing the need to “sow” new narratives that recognize plants as active agents in our world. Myers encourages us to move beyond colonial and conditioned views of plants, and to instead take the time to foster a deeper connection with plant life by acknowledging so that we can develop our own ways of becoming sensor.
In “Finding the Plantness Within Ourselves,” Sands and Whistler take this exploration further, advocating for a profound integration of plant intelligence into human consciousness. They invite us to discover our own “plantness” by recognizing the interconnectedness between humans and the vegetal world through our shared lineage. This paper challenges us to rethink our place within nature, urging a more symbiotic relationship that honors the wisdom and agency of plants.
Together, these papers call for a reimagining of human-plant interactions, where plants are seen not as passive objects but as intelligent, communicative beings in reciprocal relationship with others, including humans. What will change in both our scientific understanding and cultural narratives when we enter into an empathetic and respectful engagement with the plant kin-home?
