Should We Be Obligated to Appreciate Plants for Their Own Sake?

The contrasting perspectives of Adrian Wieczorek and Elizabeth MacLeod on plant cognition and consciousness reveal a deep divide in how we understand plant life. Wieczorek argues that plants lack the cognitive or perceptual capacities to be considered conscious beings. We do not need to appreciate plants if they are not cognizant. He contends that plants react mechanically to stimuli without any intentionality or awareness, and without facing informational variety or ambiguity in their responses, labeling their actions as cognitive or perceptual is unwarranted.

On the other hand, MacLeod presents a different worldview, suggesting that if plant neurobiology can demonstrate cognition-like responses, then it is plausible to consider plants as possessing a form of consciousness. She argues that plants have a sense of agency, and, like other living beings, their inherent dignity should be acknowledged and preserved. This perspective aligns with the views of Florianne Koechlin, who, as part of the Swiss Federal Ethics Committee on Non-Human Biotechnology, argued for the legal recognition of plant dignity, raising important ethical questions about our obligations toward plant life and their rights within the broader framework of biocentrism.

The question is, who has the burden of proof? Do we need to prove plant consciousness beyond a doubt in order to recognize it or would it be more ethical to acknowledge it, then if science feels strongly that it is not true, disprove it?
