Do plants pay attention? A possible phenomenological-empirical approach

In this week’s Plant Consciousness Commentary, I delve into the intriguing article “Do Plants Pay Attention?” by André G. Parise, based on his group 2022 essay paper, “Do plants pay attention? A possible phenomenological-empirical approach”. The paper explores the fascinating possibility that plants, despite lacking a central nervous system, exhibit attentive states. By combining insights from philosophy, psychology, physics, and plant ecophysiology, the authors propose a unique framework for understanding how plant attention operates and how to study it empirically.

This groundbreaking research uses traditional views of consciousness and cognition, to open new paths towards recognizing plant consciousness.

During the commentary, I talk about the relationship between attention and consciousness, both in plants and humans. By examining how plants pay attention, we unlock valuable insights into what we, humans, could be capable of when we connect to our plantness. There is so much here to unpack!
