In this week’s paper, “Plant Sentience? Between Romanticism and Denial,” by Segundo-Ortin and Calvo (2023), we take a deep dive into the contentious debate surrounding plant sentience. The authors explore the spectrum of perspectives, from the romantic notion of plant consciousness to the staunch denial of such possibilities within the scientific community. They address the evidence supporting plant cognition and intelligence, challenging traditional views of sentience.
In my commentary, I dive into these details and also tackle the big elephant in the room—why some scientists are reluctant to consider plants as sentient beings.
Additionally, this paper has issued a call for commentary, inviting diverse viewpoints on the subject. We will be reviewing other papers submitted in response to this thought-provoking proposal, aiming to broaden our understanding and spark meaningful discussions on plant sentience and its implications for personal development.
