More Denials of Plant Sentience, Yet There Is Hope

In this session, we continued exploring the lively debate surrounding plant sentience by diving into a diverse set of responses to the paper “Plant Sentience? Between Romanticism and Denial.” The discussion began with a traditional scientific rebuttal emphasizing the absence of neurotransmitters and signaling pathways in plants, often cited as evidence against their sentience.

However, the following papers brought a broader and more intriguing perspective to the table. Philosophical and psychological angles questioned the biases shaping this debate, while others proposed promising avenues for reframing our understanding of plant intelligence.

This session invited us to challenge conventional views and consider how expanding our framework for sentience could enrich our relationship with the natural world. The diversity of arguments showcased the ongoing evolution of this fascinating conversation, revealing how much remains to be explored about plant cognition and its implications for science, ethics, and personal growth.
