Why Finishing Never Feels Like Enough

You start something with your whole heart. A course, a project, a cause. You learn what you need, you give it everything, and then something new calls you. Each time, a quiet voice asks: Why can you not just stick with one thing?

You have probably been taught that your purpose is something to achieve. A goal to reach, a list to complete, a title to earn. And if you were disciplined enough, you would finally finish what you started and feel whole.

So you finish things. And it never feels like enough.

For years, I asked myself the same question. I managed projects at Microsoft. I produced music and art events. I studied things deeply, and then stopped. Today, I teach, mentor, manage. From the outside, it can look like a life without one direction.

Then I came to Damanhur. Here, part of your spiritual path is to discover your Element, the essence your Soul expresses in every lifetime. Damanhur describes 163 of them. Years later, in a Biomimicry for Social Innovation workshop in a valley in Slovenia, I learned to look at the Deep Patterns that organisms express. Something clicked. The Element (metaphysical) and the Deep Pattern (biological) were the same thing: your Red Thread.

So I looked back at my life. My childhood. The roles I took in high school. My career choices. My friendships. In my early 30s, I wrote a personal mission statement: “I make the dreams of others come true.” That held the key. In everything I did, I helped people and projects cross from where they were to where they wanted to be. Project manager, event producer, spiritual teacher, life coach, philosopher, music engineer, friend, sister, mentor. I am a Bridge.

Finding my Red Thread did not happen overnight, and it did not make life instantly easy. It did explain so much. I study many subjects, but I do not need to be the expert. I need to know enough to walk someone across their bridge. And when people reach the other side and continue on alone, I no longer think something is wrong with me. That is what bridges are for.

Your life has a red thread, too. Every pursuit, even one that lasted a single day, gave you something your thread needed. Sometimes your purpose is not an achievement at all. It may be a specific experience or something you can only learn in this lifetime.

Here is the hard part. What makes your pursuits look scattered is conditioning: the voices of your family, your culture, your education, telling you what a good life should look like. And conditioning is almost impossible to see from inside. Discipline will not help, because discipline is one more way to control yourself into something you were never meant to be. What you need is to learn from each experience.

This is why I work with plants. Plants learn and remember. They also let go of a memory when the present no longer confirms it. Venus Flytrap closes only when something touches ki’s sensory hairs twice within about 30 seconds. The first touch leaves a memory in the plant. If no second touch comes, the memory fades, and the trap stays open. Researchers found that Venus Flytrap stores the memory of that first touch for about 30 seconds, then releases it.

Conditioning works the opposite way. One touch—a parent’s comment, a teacher’s rule, a culture’s idea of success—and we keep that memory for decades, long after life has stopped confirming it.

In my experience, plants hold what kin learn without letting it harden into rules. Partnering with plants, we practice telling the difference between what we know in the present and what we were conditioned to believe. That is where your thread starts to show.

Finding your Red Thread is a process. It takes time and study. And it can begin with one question.

Hit reply and tell me two or three things you love that seem to have nothing in common. From outside your conditioning, I can see the first signs of a pattern you have never noticed in yourself. I will tell you what I see.
